Bush Flora has brought Artarmon’s streets to life, a breathtaking mural created by Mandy Schöne-Salter, a German-Australian artist known for her striking urban artworks.
Willoughby City Council commissioned this vibrant mural to celebrate native Australian flora. The mural features plants such as Trigger Plant, Hibbertia, Cut-leaved Daisy, Native Storksbill, and Native Flax.
Since its completion in December 2024, Bush Flora has quickly become a beloved landmark, attracting locals and visitors who stop to admire its beauty. The mural not only captivates with its vibrant colours but also encourages people to appreciate the often-overlooked biodiversity in urban spaces.
Emerge Mural Project: Bringing Public Art to the Forefront
The mural stands as one of the first artworks completed under Willoughby’s Emerge Mural Project, which launched in August 2024 as part of the Emerge Festival. The project aims to transform ordinary spaces into artistic expressions that engage the community.
Council Mayor Tanya Taylor shared her excitement about the mural’s positive impact:
“The mural perfectly reflects the creativity and community spirit that define Willoughby and highlights the natural beauty of our local flora, reminding us of the small yet stunning details of our native bushland that we might otherwise overlook.”
The Artist’s Vision: Blending Art with Environmental Awareness
Mandy Schöne-Salter, who goes by the artistic name MAN.De, has earned a reputation for creating large-scale murals across Australia and Europe. Through her work, she consistently aims to reconnect people with nature, using urban art as a medium for environmental awareness.

“I strive to reestablish the vital bond between humanity and our environment through my artworks,” Schöne-Salter explained.
“By portraying native plants and animals in urban settings, I aim to emphasise this connection and remind us of our responsibility as caretakers.”
She felt overwhelmed by the support from the local community while creating Bush Flora.
